Each year Rua Red hosts the Winter Open, an annual open submission exhibition. Work is invited from artists countrywide working in any discipline and at all career stages. The open serves as a platform to support and encourage both emerging and established artist.

In recent years there has been an unprecedented rise in the number of works submitted and this year, 2019, received the highest number of applications since the Winter Open's inception.

The selection panel find themselves in the privileged position of having a unique glimpse into the collective creative psyche, selecting work that provides a snapshot of current concerns in the artistic community and potentially creating new, exciting connections and dialogues as the works are placed together in the gallery space.

This years selection panel consisted of Helen MacMahon (Rua Red studio artist), Anita Griffin (European Connections in Digital Art), Orla McGovern and Hugh McCarthy (Rua Red).

An overall winner of the Rua Red Art Prize, selected from the Winter Open, will be awarded a solo show in Gallery 2 at some point during the ensuing 12 month period.

Rua Red has a policy of supporting artists at all stages of their career. One of the new ways that Rua Red will implement this policy will be to select and purchase works from the Winter Open exhibition to form a new collection for the organisation. The works will go on show within the building on a rotational basis in the Conference and Meeting Room areas.
