Rua Red is delighted to present the Winter Open Exhibition 2017 in Gallery 1, an annual exhibition of work by artists living in Ireland chosen from an open submission call by this year’s selection panel (Hugh McCarthy, Lorna Kavanagh, Maolíosa Boyle (Rua Red) and invited panel member, Curator Jennie Guy).

This year the panel had a difficult task selecting from an initial one hundred and seventy-seven submissions down the selected forty five artists who form this year’s Winter Open. When selecting the work the panel became aware of four particular emerging themes; the domestic/interior, portraits, the built environment and nature. These categories were utilised when installing the show so that each of the four walls are individually themed, each having their own narrative that interacts with the space.

We are delighted that this year’s exhibition spans various art forms and mediums to include sculpture, painting, mixed media, drawing, ceramics, print and photography.

We would like to remind you that our visitors also have the chance to vote for their favourite artwork. The artist will win the People’s Choice Award, a cash prize of €1000, sponsored by the Square Shopping Centre. The Voting box and slips are located at the entrance of Gallery 1.

Alongside this years selection will be an exhibition by the 2016 Winter Open winner Oscar Dempsey.
