TALLAGHT COMMUNITY ARTS -
A NEW HOME IN THE HEART OF TALLAGHT

Tallaght Community Arts (TCA), formerly Tallaght Community Arts Centre, is delighted to be the Anchor Cultural Tenant in RUA RED, South Dublin County Arts Centre.

Tallaght Community Arts a pro-active organisation working with local community groups to activate arts programmes in line with the needs of the wider Tallaght community: geographically, culturally and socially. Tallaght Community Arts work focuses on participatory arts, encouraging people of all ages to be involved in the making of art. The organisation’s aim is to work in partnership with local and national agencies in a cross-sector approach to sustainable community development, which puts people and culture at the centre.

The new home will enable TCA to profile the organisation’s commitment to a decentralised programme of arts projects being developed and delivered in and with local communities, which will be complemented by a programme of participatory arts in RUA RED.

Founded in July 1996,Tallaght Community Arts (TCA) has worked with countless artists over the last 12 years as well as involving hundreds of individuals and community groups in Tallaght in the creation of artistic work. In 2003, Virginia House, TCA’s original home, was sold in order to generate funds for the development of a purpose-built arts centre for South Dublin County in which the organisation would be based. From 2003-2009, TCA was based at a temporary site in Tallaght Village, which has facilitated a lively programme of arts activity encompassing literature, music, visual arts and performance.

TCA’s main priority and commitment is to local groups and communities, and TCA hosts regular exhibitions, Open Art Workshop, Senior Sounds Ensemble, Virginia House Creative Writing Group, the South Dublin Writers Open Forum and more, all of which will continue in the new centre.

Major Flagship Projects for 2009 include 'Radio Tallaght' community radio, in partnership with Tallaght Radio Forum; 'Tallaght Feast', with St Anne’s School Fettercairn; a 'Circus Summer School' in West Tallaght with French Community Circus The Serious Road Trip, and a new series of and 'Tallaght Talking' (lunchtime discussions).

Other plans for 2009 include 'Tallaght’s Big Draw', an 'Artist in Residence' programme, a 'Young People’s Cultural Forum' and a 'Film Club' as well as establishing the 'Sounding Off Centre for Young Musicians'. It’s going to be a busy year!

Keep an eye on our new website, www.tallaght-arts.ie, which contains lots of news about events coming up, latest news on our major projects and upcoming highlights.

We look forward to seeing you at RUA RED – and out and about – in 2009!

RADIO TALLAGHT 99.1FM - A VOICE OF COMMUNITY

Tallaght Community Arts (TCA) and Tallaght Radio Forum have come together to create RADIO TALLAGHT, a community radio station.

'Tallaght Radio Forum' is a group of community enthusiasts who have an interest in radio as a means of community development. It was set up in 2008, initially to bring together interested individuals and groups to explore the concept of community radio.

Radio Tallaght will broadcast from the new South Dublin Arts Centre over six weekends in 2009 and will feature programmes created and presented by people from the many diverse communities of Tallaght, many sitting behind a microphone for the first time.

The wide variety of programming and the perspectives covered over the six weekends of broadcasting include 'My Story', personal stories narrated by Tallaght people from various cultures, race and age; 'DJ Challenge', where a senior citizen and a young person play their individual music choices and exchange musical stories; 'Sounds of Tallaght', an audio tour of Tallaght with Tomás Maher, and much much more.

Artist and Creative Producer Patricia Baker noted “Radio Tallaght’s aim is to be a voice for the many diverse communities of Tallaght, to celebrate, explore and connect Tallaght’s rich diversity of environment, culture and people, through the medium of community radio. TCA is delighted to partner with Tallaght Radio Forum on this exciting project and we look forward to all six broadcasts this year.”

Radio Tallaght will work within a critically-engaged community arts practice context and provide a facility for cultural democracy.  It will make a significant contribution to reviving the democratic imagination by identifying work that supports citizens as engaged and collectively organised producers rather than passive, individualised consumers

Radio Tallaght’s main objectives include:

  • To deliver a high quality programme both in content and production.
  • To fully represent and explore the diversity of Tallaght’s people, culture and environment.
  • To give voice to Tallaght’s diverse population issues, private passions and creativities.
  • To tell the story of Tallaght’s rich history and future possibilities.

Radio Tallaght will work in collaboration with community and cultural organisations and local social / economic intervention agencies such as:

Tallaght Youth Services
Tallaght Partnership
Fettercairn Community Centre
Tallaght Homeless Advice Unit
Tallaght Welfare Society
South Dublin County Council

Radio Tallaght will broadcast on 99.1FM, from 11am to 6pm, on the following dates:
