Using DEMOCRACIA’s three act opera as a starting point, the Word Up Collective – a gathering of like-minded hip-hop and urban musicians, producers and spoken word artists – performed a new piece of music and words that was created in response to the DEMOCRACIA’s exhibition ORDER.
Over the course of seven weeks the musicians worked with a group of teens to produce a unique beat and explore lyric writing around the themes raised in the original work. Drawing on the political inspiration of ORDER and examining the hopes and frustrations of local young people in a very different musical context, one that will owe much to hip-hop’s social and cultural origins. The final performance brought together the students and their professional mentors for a bold new interpretation of the original’s themes. The performance featured Word Up artists Max Zanga (Tebi Rex), Matt Ó Baoill (Tebi Rex) and Natalya O’Flaherty.
Word Up Collective was founded in early 2016, the Word Up Collective brings together, for the first time, a number of artists who have been working independently and in existing groups to present a snap shot of Ireland's burgeoning hip-hop and urban music scene. From rap to pop, soul to R'n'B and spoken word, the Word Up artists are all pushing boundaries individually and are now coming together to take their work to even greater heights. As well as a regular showcase night for both its own acts and emerging talent in Dublin, they have hosted events for Other Voices, Electric Picnic, Hard Working Class Heroes, Cork Jazz Festival and Canalaphonic.
