ART
ENCLOSED
by Rob O'Connor
‘Enclosed’ is a series of portraits of eleven nuns from the closed Carmelite Order. Each nun was asked to choose an object that made a difference to their lives over the last 4 years and write a paragraph explaining their choice. With the Church receiving a large amount of negative attention in the media at present, this exhibition is a heartwarming and humorous look at life inside the closed order of the Carmelite nuns.
The artist states, “These 11 people live on nothing but donations. They have been unaffected by the recession. With the church getting a hard time recently, I hope this series portrays the nuns in a good light and it shows their sense of humour”.
Each image is accompanied by the paragraph each nun wrote about their object. While the photographs alone act as beautiful documentary evidence of the nuns’ lives, the content of the text is just as important as the image. The everyday items they chose strike a chord of recognition with the viewer - a reminder of how the simple things in life can make a big difference.
Rob lives and works in Dublin and is the talent behind rocshot photography, a freelance photography studio.
