Jim Cathcart is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art. In the early eighties he began working with a group of like-minded friends on socially engaged projects. They worked collaboratively on exterior murals and on banners and posters for political, trade union, community and peace organisations. The Scottish Arts Council commissioned them to produce and tour ‘The Unemployment Exposition’ which addressed a major issue of the time.
Jim also worked on individual projects such as public and private commissions for interior murals in Greece and Scotland. In recent years he has been busy producing smaller scale works suitable for exhibition and reproduction.
The other strand of Jim’s work for over twenty years has been in youth and community based arts in Scotland and Ireland. Initially this was a hands-on artist in residence role, moving subsequently into project development and latterly into support work, research and consultation.
Studio 5 in RUA RED will be a base for a range of drawn, painted and printed personal projects. This work will also be a starting point for looking anew at approaches to public and community art.
